Q: How often do you build?
A: We generally build every Saturday during the schoolyear. In addition, we often build during summer and winter vacations. See our calendar for the official schedule of events, or contact Andrew Sun, the acting Construction Manager, to check about building trips.
Q: Where do you build?
A: Our chapter sponsors a house in partnership with Sandtown Habitat for Humanity. This Habitat affiliate works to renovate abandoned rowhouses in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore. We provide transportation to and from Baltimore every Saturday.
Q: How can I participate in a building trip?
A: Come to our weekly meetings to sign up. Meetings are Tuesdays at 6:30pm in room 2242 of HJ Patterson Hall. Meeting attendees get the first chance to sign-up for all events. Also, you can subscribe to the mailing list to stay up to date about upcoming opportunities.
Q: Do I need any prior experience to participate?
A: Not at all. We'll teach you everything you need to know. You don't need to bring any tools either - just come prepared to have a good time.
Q: I am unable to make it to meetings because of class, work, etc. Can I still participate?
A: Yes. If you want to go on a build trip, come by the Habitat office in Stamp Student Union during office hours (as listed on the 'Meetings' page) to sign up. If you want to get involved in a fundraiser, contact Rebecca Kahn, the fundraising chair.
Q: If I come building once, does that mean I have to come building again?
A: Habitat does not entail any kind of a commitment - you're free to volunteer as often or as little as you like. So if you've never been building with us before, there's no reason not to get involved - you've got nothing to lose.
Q: I can't make it to Saturday building trips. Can I still get involved with Habitat?
A: Absolutely! Our chapter is very active and when we're not building we're always busy with other things. Check out the rest of the website, and come to our weekly meetings for more info.
Q: I have to fulfill an individual community service requirement. Can I volunteer with UMD Habitat for Humanity?
A: Certainly! First make sure Habitat for Humanity is eligible for your requirements, and then when you volunteer with us remember to keep track of your hours and bring whatever documentation is required. Note that unfortunately, we cannot give priority to people with a service requirement.
Q: I have a group of people (e.g. HONR100 class, GEMS100 class, Civicus or Scholars group, fraternity/sorority, etc.) that would like to build with Habitat. Can I arrange to have our group come on a build trip?
A: We're more than happy to work with other campus groups. If your group of volunteers has fewer than 12 members, and/or if you are able to provide your own transportation, please contact Andrew Sun as early as possible about working with us.
Q: Where can I find out more about Habitat in other states/countries?
A: Our main page sometimes has Habitat news from around the world. You can also check out the Habitat International homepage at http://www.habitat.org.
If you want to search for specific Habitat affiliates, use the search engine at http://www.habitat.org/local.
